Hip Dysplasia 101

Hip Dysplasia: a congenital or acquired deformation of the hip joint. In my case, the socket is too shallow, which causes uneven pressure on the joint, a premature breakdown of cartilage and could cause early osteoarthritis. Over time, dysplasia can cause immense pain once the bones begin to rub on one another.

PAO surgery: PAO or Periacetabular Osteotomy is a procedure that cuts the hip socket out of the pelvis to allow the socket to be repositioned and screwed back in place. It involves cutting the pelvis in several places and then screwing it back together, causing the socket joint to be less shallow and more accepting of the ball joint. It's meant to preserve the hip and prevent further arthritis and pain.

Femoral Acetabular Impingement (FAI): a condition of too much friction in the hip joint. In my case, the FAI is caused by a mushroom-shaped femoral head. The ball and socket rub abnormally causing damage in the hip joint.
